Multiplication Tables
If you can add, you can multiply!
Multiplication is just a quicker way to add a series of numbers.
For example, if you want to add the number 2 to itself, it is written as 2 + 2, which equals 4.
Adding another 2 is written as 2 + 2 + 2 = 6.
Adding more 2s becomes a cumbersome exercise. It is done much faster by using multiplication - that is, instead of writing 2 + 2 + 2 = 6, use the expression 3 x 2 = 6.
By simply memorising the complete set of multiplication tables you will be able to perform any mathematical calculation – simple or complex. But, not knowing your multiplication tables well may cost you dearly later in life. It has been said by more than one professor that, often the basic problem with science and maths students at university or college is that they do not know their basic multiplication tables.
Here is a few facts of multiplication:
- Any number times zero (0) is always 0: 5x0=0, 12x0=0
- Any number time 1 is always equal to itself: 3x1=3, 6x1=6
- Multiplication has a commutative property - it does not matter in which order the product of two (or more) numbers is written , the answer is always the same: 9 x 3 = 27; 3 x 9 = 27
Multiplication tricks to help them learn:
If the kids know a few multiplication table tricks, it will help them a great deal to reduce the learning time.
- Multiplication with 10: Add 0 at the end of multiplier. Example: 10 x 45 = 450, 10 x 8 = 80
- Multiplication with 11 with a number smaller than 10: Double digits of the number: 11 x 2 = 22, 11 x 3 = 33, 11 x 4 = 44 ... 11 x 9 = 99
- Multiplication with 11 with a number greater than 9: Separate the number(multiplier), add the 2 numbers and place the addition between the two digits of the number(multiplier). Example: 11 x 54 , multiplier = 54,
If the sum of the addition of the 2 numbers in the multiplier is more than 10, add the first digit of the addition to the first number of the multiplier, place the second number of the addition in the middle and leave the last number of the multiplier last. Example:
11 x 84 = 8 [8+4] 4 -> 8 [12] 4 -> [8+1] 2 4 -> 924
- Multiplication with 4: Multiply the number with 2 and multiply the answer with 2. Example: 4 x 6 = (6 x 2) x 2 = 12 x 2 = 24
- Multiplication with 5: The number(multiplier) multiplied by 10 and then divided by 2. Example: 5 x 7 = (7 x 10)/2 = 70/2 = 35
